Surfing
Cape Hatteras is widely regarded as the best surf spot on the East Coast. The bend in our island gives us countless possibilities for aligning swell and wind directions. While we’re most well known for our tubing beach breaks, you’ll also find rippable peaks, longboard perfection, and plenty of family friendly waves as well.
Surfing like it used to be
Part of the beauty of surfing in Cape Hatteras is the ability to get away from the crowds and find your own wave. With unlimited access and the the ability to go 4×4 to explore, Cape Hatteras offers incredible potential to provide a unique surfing experience.

The Watermen’s Difference
When you check in at our Welcome Desk, our staff will tune you in to the best surf location for the current swell and what type of conditions you’re looking for. We’ve got our feet in the water from Kitty Hawk to Hatteras Village (over 75 miles) so we know where to send you for the best session.

SURFING FAQ
-
Is it always big and barreling like the videos?
It’s true, Cape Hatteras is known for its barrels. But what we also have are rippable peaks, longboard waves, grom waves and the ability to find private perfection. Search and you shall find! (Or just ask our staff because that’s way easier)
-
What is the water temperature like?
We experience every water temperature there is, from above 80F (Summer) to as low as 40F (Winter). We’re in trunks or a wetsuit top four plus months a year. Spring and Fall sees springsuits and fullsuits, and in the Winter months we’re typically in hooded 4/3 or 5/4mms.
