SURFING FAQ
Is it always big and barreling like the videos?
It’s true, Cape Hatteras is known for its barrels. But what we also have are rippable peaks, longboard waves, grom waves and the ability to find private perfection. Search and you shall find! (Or just ask our staff because that’s way easier)
What is the water temperature like?
We experience every water temperature there is, from above 80F (Summer) to as low as 40F (Winter). We’re in trunks or a wetsuit top four plus months a year. Spring and Fall sees springsuits and fullsuits, and in the Winter months we’re typically in hooded 4/3 or 5/4mms.
What type of surfboards are available for rent?
REAL has a selection of funboards and longboards for rent, as well as soft tops and bodyboards. You can also purchase a new board at REAL, with over 1,000 boards in stock, use it for your trip, and they’ll ship it to you when you fly home. Check out REALwatersports.com or call 252-987-6000.
What do I need to do to access the 4x4 surfing spots?
Make sure you request a 4WD SUV or Truck for your rental. You can purchase a 4x4 Off Road Vehicle Permit at the National Park offices at Coquina Beach (to our north) and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (to our south). Ten day permits are $50, annual permits are $120. If you want to hit the “Easy Button” consider taking a REAL Custom Surf Camp which can be tailored to any ability level from beginner to traveling pro. This camp includes 4x4 vehicle and all the local knowledge to put you on the session of the day.
